What is SAP?

Sap is a German software company. SAP stands for "systems, applications and products in the data processing". The company is market leader with a market share of 29% (1997). SAP's clients are from about 7,500 customers in more than 90 countries. The total turnover amounted in 1997 to more than 3.5 billion US Dollars. The venture has its consumers mainly in the lines Engineering & Construction, high Tech & Electronics, Chemicals and Consumer product.
SAP has several large products: R/3, Netweaver, SRM, CRM and Business One. One this website you will find mainly information about SAP R/3. In R/3 all functional areas are covered by over 1.000 predefined business processes which can be customized to a companies own business model.

Central for SAP system is the supply-chain: the whole process from suplier to consumer. To coordinate information-, goods- and financial streams together in an optimal way and agianst minimum costs, you can realize a maximum cutomer respons. This is the SAP r/3 philosophy. Thus it is for example possible for a customer by means of the Internet to get information on products of a certain venture, configure your own product and place your order. This order arrives then automatically in SAP R/3; the system generates automatically an order to the suppliers (multi company planning) and also puts the required processes in functioning within the venture. We can therefore speak of extended supply-chain concept.

On this website we give you a overview of the SAP R/3 Modules. In the articles different aspects of each module are described. We will start with Financial Accounting followed by Controlling, Human Resources, Material Management and Sales Distribution.

SAP Financial Accounting

SAP Financial Accounting (Fl) collects, manages and consists of all needed data from an organization which is needed for a constructive financial accountancy. It is the basis for company planning and control and makes it possible to meet up with the national and international information requirements. Financial Accounting consists of different submodules: General Ledger Accounting (FI-GL) Accounts Payable (Fl-AP) Accounts Receivable (Fl-AR) Asset Accounting (FI-AA) Special Ledgers (FI-SL).
FI communicates with other main SAP modules like Material Management for example Accounts Payable and Sales and Distribution in case of the Accounts Receivable.

SAP Controlling

Within SAP Controlling (CO) it is all about to coordinate, control and optimize the business processes in the organization. For this we need data about budgets and real costs and benefits. In SAP controlling your data is kept in a 'controling area'. In the controlling area you keep the financial data organized in such a way that is always possible to control this data in aggregated terms.
CO communicates with Financial Accounting and also delivers data to Financial Management and Material Management. Controlling consists of the following submodules: Overhead Cost Controlling (CO-OM) Product Cost Controlling (CO-PC) Profitability Analyses (CO-PA).

These modules can operate independently from each other, but the strength of the Controlling Module is the integration of its different submodules with the other parts in SAP R/3.
